Leading Doug Ford states motorists in Ontario will quickly be ready to skip the yearly registration of their licence plates as the province works to make this system automatic.

Ford manufactured the announcement at a news conference in Toronto on Tuesday early morning.

“We are getting rid of that entirely. Registering your car or truck, we did the initially action, acquiring rid of the stickers. Now we are obtaining rid of the re-registration,” the premier mentioned in response to a concern about a surge in expired plates on Ontario roads.

“It will be quickly re-registered so folks will not have to be concerned about that at all.”

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) verified to CTV News Toronto that as of January 2024, there are 1,015,139 expired plates in Ontario.

A spokesperson for the ministry claimed the computerized renewal will only be readily available for motorists “in fantastic standing,” meaning that people with parking tickets or toll costs will have to do it manually.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt earlier claimed that far more and additional motorists are forgetting to renew now that the process is free.

The Ford governing administration formerly eliminated all fees connected with the once-a-year registration of licence plates in 2022.

As of March 13, 2022, drivers of passenger automobiles, motorcycles, mopeds and light commercial vehicles ended up no extended expected to shell out to renew their licence plates or place a sticker on them. The value to renew licence stickers for the calendar year was previously $60 in northern Ontario and $120 in southern Ontario.

In December, Ontario Provincial Police confirmed to CTV Toronto that there were hundreds of thousands of drivers across the province with unregistered licence plates following the move by the province. Motorists who are unsuccessful to renew their plate could face a $500 good for the violation under the Highway Targeted visitors Act.

When asked when renewals will officially be scrapped, Ford could not deliver details but mentioned that it will occur “extremely soon.”

“It will be legislated when we get back,” he explained.

The premier’s business office verified to CP24.com that the licence plate renewal improvements will be section of a larger sized invoice that consists of a prerequisite that a long run provincial carbon pricing strategy be put to a referendum.

The bill is anticipated to be tabled Tuesday when MPPs return to the Legislature.
